One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each, I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints; other times there was only one. During the low periods of my life, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said, "You promised me, Lord, that you would walk with me always. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?"

The Lord replied, "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you."

Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." This is a firm promise from God. He will not abandon us, regardless of the challenges we face.

Isaiah 43:2 adds another layer of comfort: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." This verse beautifully portrays God walking beside us through every difficulty, shielding us from harm and giving us the strength to endure.

After a mighty victory against the prophets of Baal, Queen Jezebel threatened his life. Elijah, a fearless prophet, felt afraid and ran for his life. Alone in the wilderness, he questioned God's presence, saying, "I have had enough, Lord. Take my life!" (1 Kings 19:4).

God's Faithfulness, Even in Doubt

But even in Elijah's despair, God didn't abandon him. The Lord provided for Elijah's needs and reminded him of his purpose. Similarly, the Psalmist cries out in Psalm 10:1, "Why, Lord, do you stand aloof? Why do you hide in times of trouble?" Yet, the Psalms are filled with stories of God's enduring faithfulness.
